A rice cooker is a wonderful thing for a bachelor to have, particularly an absent-minded bachelor, as it cooks automatically and turns off all by itself. The worst that can possibly happen is stone cold, perfectly cooked rice.
However, plain rice is a little dull.
I ask the Asian members of the audience to avert their eyes from this profanity of the sacred fluffy grain. Us Gaijin like to have it ... embellished.
Pour it in the cooker. Stir it all up. Push the button. Wait impatiently until done.
The basic recipe makes a suitable everyday side dish. To turn this into a main dish, use pitted black Queen olives, and stuff them with ... well, whatever seems intriguing. Shrimp, deviled ham or turkey, garlic cloves...
Or, alternatively, you can serve it as a side dish with something else.... such as "It's not art, but it's Pollock"
