Spyral Fox's Herbal Healing Ointment for Bruises

Contributed by Adina (spyralfox@aol.com)

NOTE TO USER: Do not use on open cuts, second or third degree burns. Not effective for sore joints or muscles. Do not use if you know you are allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients. Follow patch-test directions before using.

I make no guarantee that this will hasten healing of bruises in any way, shape, form, or manner. For more details about bruising and information about this ointment, see the article on bruise cream on my other site. As explained there, I am skeptical as to whether it is the herbs in this ointment that help, or just he action of rubbing on a cream.

Ingredients:

1 liter of oil, preferably almond. If almond is not available, use canola or safflower. Don't use olive oil, some people are sensitive to the aromatics in it.

Herbs (I do not recommend fresh, since they will also contain volatile chemicals, some of which are irritants. If you do use fresh, you're on your own for actual amounts)

Binding agent: 100 g finely grated beeswax (IME, this works better than other food grade waxes, but you can substitute paraffin or another similar substance)

Instructions:

Simmer all the herbs in oil over low heat for 1-2 hours. Watch VERY closely -- do not allow mixture to boil.

Strain mixture through #4 filter paper. If you don't have access to laboratory-grade filters, use a pair of coffee filters. If they tear, repeat -- filtered mixture should have no solid particles.

Return filtered mixture to pot, or -- better yet -- to similar pot over heat. Discard filtrate (particles and filter paper).

Slowly add small portions (10 - 15 g at a time) of beeswax, stirring in each gently until melted, before adding next portion.

Pour liquid into a wide-mouthed, shallow jars, like the type cold-cream comes in. Let set. Will have texture that's "soft" when it cools. Store in cool, dark place. Do not keep longer than three months. Check for rancidity before use if house is warm; food-grade oils do not keep forever.
